We occasionally get questions about the Hot Sauce puzzle and suggestions that there is an error.  There are no errors in this puzzle, but as this is one of the first harder puzzles in this small size, it can require some extra explanation!

Most questions ask about Clue 3.  So let's take a closer look at it.  (Spoiler, you might wish to skim this at first, and check the reference link at the end)

Each sauce item in the puzzle, can be identified in multiple ways:
  • Name of the sauce
  • Employee, the person who makes it.
  • SHU level, or how hot it is.

The clue states:

The four products are the sauce rated at 10,000 SHU, "Pants on Fire", Kate's sauce and "Lips Ablaze".

There are four different sauces, which is why this clue is comparing four items.

Here are some, but not all of the bits of information we can glean from this clue:

  • Since each item is a representation of one of the four sauces, none of them are related. The clue is giving you a means to eliminate several possible relations
  • Kate's sauce is not named either "Pants on Fire", or "Lips Ablaze". It also is not rated at 10,000 SHU, so put an X in the appropriate spaces
  • "Pants on Fire" is not Kate's sauce, nor is it rated at 10,000 SHU. Put and X in the appropriate spaces, and so on
